Silly Orc

For several years I admired a really awesome mask made by a local puppet maker Nick Barone, which was for rent at a local costume shop. Over the years the mask started degrading from repeated use and the last time I saw it in the store, the teeth were literally crumbling, and the horns were falling apart. At that point I couldn't take it anymore, and bought the mask. I restored it, repairing the horns, and replacing all the teeth with my own carved in a similar foam.

Then I created a whole costume around the mask. I created an outfit, a pair of gloves and a balaklava to match the mask, and a shield and axe.

The clothing consists of a pair of pants in faux suede, a shirt, a ripped shirt, a vest with fur trim, a pair of boots with fur trim and leg wrappings.

The shield is carved out of a hard construction foam. The shield has chippngs and cuts cut into it, and has fake wood veneer sticky-back plastic attached to it. On top of that the details are glued. The details have also been painted black, and dry brushed with a metallic acrylic to resemble metal. The axe was created by my husband, and is a fully functional boffer weapon carved in foam, covered in duct tape, fake wood veneer and hockey tape.

The costume was always supposed to be very cartoony. In retrospect I might have used brighter colors for the clothes, but I am quite pleased with the end result.
