day trip to Microsoft

this is too easy a story to write,
the moon could mumble it in her sleep.
we took the predawn flight to Seattle,
the streets at 4am dark & wet
as if we’d been accidentally swallowed by disaster
or followed it like honorary pallbearers,
slow marching to Microsoft.

so, I can tell you now
I’ve seen what passes for charm
in Redmond, Washington. I’ve seen them
lean forward with half-crescent toothy grins
& ask if we mind that they intend
to destroy us. daring us to count their teeth.
daring us to object,
with all the arrogance of ancient Rome.
