the co-founder departs

I’ve spent the last 3 days
gathering the men I’ve hired
into closed rooms
in small groups of 2 & 3,
telling them I’m leaving.
& they all look immediately older
& more tired, point to the bare spots
where the hair they came in with
used to be. they sit & look at me
with unblinking stares,
holding their breaths.
I don’t know what they’re waiting for.
so I talk & talk
to keep their sadness from me.
even the desk clerk
at the gym down the street
breaks down in tears
when I terminate my membership.
how much of my identity have I squandered here?
how much do I leave behind when I go?
