they say the engineers aren’t working hard enoughthere’s a scene in ‘Alice in Wonderland’ where the Duchess sneers at Alice & says, when I was your age, I believed five impossible things before breakfast. if so, Internet engineers must be the oarsmen on that Duchess’ barge. believe the impossible before breakfast. finish it by lunch. & if they’ve decided we’ll reach the island of Crete by dawn, believe harder. row faster. sleep when you’re old. for once in Crete, we’ll have soft shelled crabs & cigars. & by special arrangement, sunset will linger 5 extra hours over the temple of the goddess for all men lost at sea. unfortunately, her name has been forgotten & the temple looted of its gold, but the sunset. ah, the sunset will be beyond description. one of our engineers had a heart attack this morning, falling face-first in a puddle of no’s. Crete seems so far away. |
