watching my job slip away

I’ve been carrying my resignation in my shoe.
I’ve been jogging the building, eyes closed,
chasing the rats of the moment—
the clip-ons, the posties,
the small things
fleeing before me—
trying not to think about what comes after.
about what I’ll do
when I’m not here anymore.
I’ve discovered a steady state of crisis
& daily emergency
smell like donut scented ozone,
too much greasy & sugar in the air,
the office worker’s cocaine,
& I can tell from the doorway
how bad things will be today.
