the engineer discovers it’s late winter

the place I live in is not always beautiful.
it is not beautiful at each intersection.
it is not beautiful in all seasons.
but lately
the sunsets have been breathtaking.
the black-bottomed rolling clouds
separate & serene,
high as a model’s cheekbones
& as coldly uncaring,
against a sky red as Chinese silk.
a full moon,
it’s sharp craters & scars,
can be seen through ornamental cherries
while your breath drifts from you
like an escaping soul.
waist-high winter grass,
so green,
the green of crayons & plastic frogs,
bends in the wind
& rustles like bed sheets.
in our garden, in the rain,
we ate oranges.
I kissed you & you were sweet.
