a county orange jumpsuit for joan of arc

the only desk in the building
is a folding table
the kind my mother spent her afternoons
playing penny-a-point bridge on
and bows beneath a new computer.

beyond it,
through high, square windows,
a view of the county jail
where patty hearst waited months for her trial
to reach its bunny-caught-in-the-bank-camera
conclusion.

in the ground floor mexican restaurant,
a shrine to the virgin mary with its
stubby white candles and sweet smoke
beneath my feet.

the computer screen is empty,
ready to accept my fingerprints and sweat,
and over the polishing of my weapons
i hear the taco cook praying.
