last night again we didn't talk

it's been 17 years since i quit smoking
but when i think too much
and work too hard, i still pat my pockets
for a pack of cigarettes

last night instead
i went for a walk
when i got tired of drinking cold coffee
to keep myself awake

and the smell of the star jasmine
reminded me of what you'd said
about dusk and dead babies
and how we used to laugh at how
unhip it is for a woman
to be in touch with her masculine side
but age takes care of that for you
your gender slowly slipping away

yesterday someone asked me
if i'd considered
bleaching my upper lip to match
my shoulder length hair
and i turned towards you
to explain
to see if any of this made sense

so. yes. i remain uncured
of the bad habit of reaching
for things that won't be there
