das bootour competition did something clever today it wasn't a surprise we'd had it circled for a month july 29th our competition does something clever. but our counter measures failed and their torpedo got through minor damage to the stern and when i'd managed to make it up to the bridge through the roar and the smoke of the machine room phil, gerry, and dave, the marketing consultant we'd hired, were fighting for control of the rudder. dave said we're the gatekeepers at jurassic park and the dinosaurs don't have to intend to kill us, they just have to sit down. whoa, dave you're mixing your metaphors and you've got the wrong movie our engines are strong we've got fuel in the tanks we're alive and still on target. things are settling down a bit. dave's been temporarily banned from the bridge and has to use persuasion rather than adrenaline to convince us to turn and change course for the next in a series of seven seas, but as i stood in the open doorway grimy and wet from the leaks in the pipes and ports of the software i admired the luxury of space in the command center, room to react and to plot your own separate course. while down in the engine room i sit six inches from a 20 inch screen trying to start over from chapter one where they explain how to turn on the machine and what's with this second button on the mouse, wishing they served popcorn with the in-flight movie. |
