an old macintosh programmer mutters over market share

a month ago, apple computers
looked me in the eye
and asked for our product
to be mac first, mac only
and i told them too late --
wasn't gonna happen

today it was intel
with that same question
intel first. intel only
me. me. me.
and i told them
we'll follow the money --
windows. mac. unix.
and they gloated and laughed
rubbing their hands
telling me not to even bother
with those other guys

a decade ago
it was intel who stumbled,
almost swallowed by japan inc
their chips not selling.
but they were us
engineers in the same bad tie and coat
before the valley discovered birkenstocks.
so we struggled to find ways
to put their chips in our designs

fought our managers to keep intel afloat
and now they've become bad winners
wearing the polished brass of their arrogance
on their polo shirts.

my loved ones are out there
on the wrong side of the barbed wire fence,
watching me drink coffee with intel.
