the mathematics of diesel engines (and love)

there's a song of a lost theorem
i hum on the way to work
square dancing with yellow checker
(eat at chevy's) cabs and
swinging myself up and down
the steep steps of the train

singing a sweet equation which refuses
to resolve into a major chord,
into a single raw digit
(the answer is not 42),
while i dodge the thrusting hands
of people who believe i hold the cash back
on their life-isn't-fair deposit.

the note of its subsets and subscripts,
its countermelody of remember-to-pick-up-the-milk,
its small truth,
well worn and familiar.

and if i forgot this morning,
while rinsing my coffee cup
and racing you to the gate,
let me repeat myself

i love you
