on meeting the producer of a famous rock star

i'm told he was famous and
i should have been thrilled
to meet him
and he dug in his pocket
for some memento
to re-memento him by
and gave me a quarter
1992 u.s. mint
like i was panhandling
for spare change from his fame
but i took it
cuz i was low on coins
for the coke machine
and the bridge toll home
was a dollar and 50 cents

and as he walked away
he told his friends
how it was the women
hanging on him
like that
that made his job so great

i still take quarters
from strangers because now
it's a two dollar bridge toll
and coke machines have gone up
again. and refusing their money
won't stop them
from trying to find their fame
in my face.
