Giotto's bell tower


513 stone steps.
past yards of hand carved birds
and elephants, saints and flowers.
white/pink/green alternating marble
in horizontal stripes.
a long sweaty series of switchbacks
to appreciate the gothic mind,
which saw the devil in white space.
uncarved stone
an unpraised God.

at the top, a man & woman
announce they're in showbiz
and want me to snap their picture
with the red bricked duomo
in the background.

his accent bouncing between
British and American,
BBC and CNN,
he points up and
shows me the cross
on top of the TV antenna
at the tip of the bell tower
and asks me if I think
they're receiving
messages from God.
