watching the water from the barpassenger ferries in Venice, the vaporettos, each have an English expression painted on the side. "I heard the echo of the big bang in your heart beat" is followed by "love is the only mystery which complete encapsulates us" which is passed going the opposite way by "there will always be arguments about whether Pasternak was a marxist, the origins of borscht soup and the whereabouts of the letter h." smaller boats sway in and around them with a complex system of hand signals and horns. the polished wood of the water taxis, the black cheshire cat grin of gondolas -- each with 5 Japanese tourists and an accordion player accompanying a man in dark suit standing in the prow singing English versions of Italian love songs. and the small flat boats carrying freight, bringing in the small things from other places we take with us to remind us of Venice. |
